WHO WE ARE

All about who we are, why we do what we do, and what we hope the Houston Cafe will be for you.

BEGINNINGS

It all started with our parents, Steve and Ruth!

Ruth was born in Paraguay, South America. She lived there with her family who was in missions until she was 15, when they moved back to Tennessee. A few years later, she met our dad (who was from the small town of Strasburg, PA) at a nursing home in Virginia where they volunteered as CNAs… and the rest is history!

Growing up in a totally different culture, Ruth has always loved cooking and trying out different things in the kitchen and from a young age, she dreamed of starting her own cafe. She put that dream on hold for a time, but the Lord did not forget her desire!

When the opportunity presented itself to open The Houston Cafe, she would only say “yes” if her whole family was on board. One by one, we all agreed, and renovations began! After a few short weeks and many long days, we were finally ready to open our doors to the public in December 2021. When we say that our cafe is “family-owned and operated,” we really mean it!

The space

We made this space our own by incorporating a modern-western style throughout the cafe. Our entire family loves the outdoors and we are fascinated by the simplicity and ruggedness of the wild-wild-west.

The name “The Houston” came from this love for the west, but also from the name of the road we sit on — Houston Run Drive.

Above all, our mission is for The Houston Cafe to be a place where community is grown, friendships are deepened, and everyone who walks through our doors feels loved, cared for, welcomed, and safe.

PS: Our live edge tables were hand made by Michael’s Designs and our longhorns are from Dreamwood Farms!

With hints of South American influence infiltrating our traditional Lancaster County cuisine, you are sure to find something new and exciting to try! In all of our creations, we value the importance of supporting local small businesses (plus, their products are the best)!
